Power crisis forces Akiz Jute Mills to stop production

JESSORE, Aug 14: The employees of Akiz Jute Mills here Saturday threatened to declare the mills closed if uninterrupted power supply was not ensured.

The Akiz Jute Mills Employees Union made the threat at a press conference held at the Nawapara Press Club. There are about 5,500 employees in the mills.

Executive Director of the Mills Alamgir Hussain read out a written statement at the press conference.

The Mills started production in 1997. The Mills exported a total of 21572 tonnes of jute yearn in 2008 and about 40,000 tonnes of jute yearn in 2009-10 fiscal year.

The Mills needs 2.50 megawatts of electricity per day but it gets a little against its demand. As a result, the Mills authorities are facing difficulties every day in running the Mills.
